Day 1: From Athens – Corinth Canal – Odontotos Rack Railway – Kalavryta

Your journey begins with a morning departure from Athens, heading west towards the Corinth Canal, one of Greece’s most significant engineering marvels. This narrow canal, stretching 6.4 km, connects the Aegean and Ionian Seas and offers an incredible photo opportunity with its towering walls and breathtaking views. After a short stop, we continue towards the coastal town of Diakopto, where a unique experience awaits.

At Diakopto, you’ll board the legendary Odontotos Rack Railway, a scenic train ride through the Vouraikos Gorge. This 22 km journey takes you up the rugged slopes of Mount Helmos, through tunnels, over bridges, and alongside rivers, offering spectacular natural landscapes. The train ride, considered one of the most beautiful in Europe, takes about an hour and arrives at the charming mountain town of Kalavryta.

Upon arrival, we head to the Municipal Museum of the Kalavryta Holocaust, a deeply moving site that recounts the tragic history of the town during World War II. The museum is housed in the old school, where the town’s men and boys were gathered before being executed by Nazi forces on December 13, 1943. You’ll learn about the town’s heartbreaking past, the destruction it suffered, and the resilience of its people.

Next, we visit the Monument to the Victims of the Nazi Massacre, a solemn memorial dedicated to those who lost their lives in the tragic event. Situated on a hill with a panoramic view of Kalavryta, the site is a place of remembrance and reflection.

After exploring these historical landmarks, the rest of the day is yours to enjoy free time in Kalavryta. Stroll through the cobbled streets, visit local shops selling traditional Greek mountain products, and relax in a cozy café with a cup of Greek coffee or tsipouro. If time permits, you can visit the Agia Lavra Monastery, one of the oldest and most historic monasteries in Greece, known for its role in the Greek War of Independence in 1821.

In the evening, check into your accommodation and enjoy a delicious dinner at one of the local tavernas, savoring traditional dishes like lamb kleftiko, homemade pies, and fresh local cheeses.

Day 2: Cave of the Lakes – Return to Athens

After a leisurely breakfast in Kalavryta, we begin our journey towards one of the Peloponnese’s hidden gems, the Cave of the Lakes in Kastria. This impressive cave, located just 17 km from Kalavryta, is renowned for its spectacular rock formations, underground lakes, and multi-level chambers.

As you explore the cave, you’ll walk along wooden bridges over crystal-clear waters, witnessing fascinating stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over millions of years. The cave consists of 13 cascading lakes, with only the first part open to visitors. Mythology and legends surround the cave, making it not only a natural wonder but also a place of mystery.

Following the cave exploration, we begin our return journey to Athens, stopping along the way for a relaxed lunch at a traditional Greek taverna, where you can enjoy authentic dishes made from local ingredients.

By early evening, we arrive back in Athens, concluding an unforgettable 2-day journey filled with history, nature, and breathtaking scenery.

• Departure time is usually between 5:00am-9:00am, based on your preference!

• Cancellations between 3 and 6 days in advance of the tour incur a 50% cancellation fee
• Cancellations within 2 days of the scheduled departure incur a 100% cancellation fee
• For "EXTRAS" you have purchased (Admission fees, Professional tour guides, hotels, Lunch or dinner etc.) You can cancel free of charge until 7days before your tour is due to start
• After that time, no changes to pick-up times and no refunds or cancellations can be made
